It's a weird little world out there, but it's for a really good cause.

An alicorn is a unicorn's horn, but the word is also used interchangeably for the winged (flying) unicorn.

In her classic work Physica, the Christian mystic Abbess Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) wrote of a little piece of metal or glass found at the base of the unicorn horn. This subsequently became lapis monoceros (unicorn stone), which was described as a red stone found at the base of a unicorn's horn. Lapis Monoceros was credited not only with all the powers attributed to unicorn horn but also with the power of projection (i.e. transmutation of base metals to gold) associated with the philosopher's stone, bringing us back to the lunar unicorn of alchemy.

I mention that verse because it's quite the subject of commentary regarding the origins of King David (from Ruth, from Moab, from Lot, from Sodom). For example:

The name of the Mashiach is listed as one of the seven things that preceded the creation of the world. (Tana d’vei Eliahu Rabba 31; cf. Bereishit Rabba 1:4) (The other six are the Torah, teshuva, Purgatory (Gehinom), the Garden of Eden [the abode of the soul in the afterlife], the Throne of Glory, and the Temple. All these are related to the process of achieving the purpose of Creation.)

It had been "lost" in Sodom, as it is written, "I have found David, My servant" (Psalms 89:210), and our sages said that this means that G‑d found [the seed of David's soul] in Sodom, in the person of Lot, Abraham's nephew.

I have done a fair amount of work at Redstone, most of it on the Army side not the NASA side. It’s all one fenced area; the Army calls it “Redstone Arsenal”, NASA calls it “Marshall Space Flight Center”. Fascinating place with a lot of history. The “Space and Rocket Center” is well worth a visit if you’re in the area. It concentrates mostly on the NASA activities.

Thanks much for providing the info about the local naming conventions. Without being in a place in person, who’d really think about that. Now that you mention it though, that’s not unusual.

I sure would like to visit, but I’m quite far away and travel stresses me out. I’m at the I’ve-been-where-I’ve-been stage.
